The Secret Life

So I happened to watch this movie on Lifetime called The Pregnancy Pact. It is based on true events about this group of girls who all decide they are going to get pregnant while they are still in high school. It got me thinking about what teenage girls actually think when they are watching these types of programs. This particular movie did a pretty good job at showing the negative consequences of their actions, but what are teens getting out of it when they have the attitude of how bad things wont happen to them?

In the movie the school is only teaching about abstinence and not teaching the teens anything else in fear that it will give the teens ideas instead of preventing those things from happening. Ironically they also have a day care center in their school that costs $13,000.00 a year to take care of one of the high school students' baby... What a perdicament! Does teaching about types of prevention increase the amount of sexual activity amongst teenagers?

There is also another program called The Secret Life of the American Teenager which seems to me like it would make a teenager who is not sexually active think that there must be something wrong with them. This program really does not show any negative consequences with any of their actions. One girl has a child and is still having a good life just like everyone else. They also show teenagers that at the beginning have strong religious beliefs about being abstinent and yet these characters also end up being sexually active with no negative consequences.

I really want to know if there is a correlation between what teens were doing before watching these types of programs and what they think is acceptable and "cool" and what they are doing after watching these programs.
